Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
A Treatable Epidemic
Suddenly a heart stops beating. There is no warning. An electrical disturbance in the heart muscle stops the heart from pumping vital blood. Without a fresh supply of oxygenated blood the brain dies within minutes. A life is forever lost. Approximately 130 Canadians will fall victim to Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) today. Tragically, only about 5% will receive rapid life saving treatment. Tragically because this is a treatable epidemic. Rapid CPR and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) could have made the outcome different. Chain Of Survival
Rapid Defibrillation + CPR
A victim in Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) requires rapid Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and applying an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). CPR by itself is only a half of the treatment. An AED is the other half. Effective emergency care requires High Quality CPR and rapid defibrillation. The fact is that only half of the victims of Sudden Cardiac Arrest need a shock. All of them need High Quality CPR. To be effective CPR requires the rescuer to Push Hard and Push Fast, while allowing full chest recoil between each compression. Fully 2010 CPR Guidelines Compliant
ZOLL AED Plus® & Pro Defibrillators
The ZOLL AED Plus® is the first and only full-rescue Automated External Defibrillator (AED) that provides Real CPR Help® for depth and rate of compressions. With real-time feedback the rescuer can provide the best manual CPR possible in a Sudden Cardiac Arrest. The ZOLL AED Plus® also guides rescuers through the complete Chain of Survival helping all SCA victims, not just those needing a shock.
The ZOLL AED Pro® provides advanced capabilities for BLS and ALS users with innovative Real CPR Help® technology for rate and depth of chest compressions. The See-Thru CPR® capability filters CPR chest compressions, displaying the underlying cardiac rhythm. TheAED Pro® is unmatched in its ruggedness and durability and is ideal for any environment. Real CPR Help®
CPR Help® technology gives you real-time depth and rate CPR feedback while you deliver cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), providing guidance that can improve CPR quality. Real CPR Help® in action in this demo
Inadequate compression rate and depth are common during CPR. Adult victims need at least 100 compressions per minute and at a depth of at least 2 inches (5 cm). Compressions must be done well to effectively move blood and oxygen.
The ZOLL AED Plus® converts compression data instantaneously from the CPR-D-padzand provides an adaptive metronome to help the rescuer with the proper rate and depth, saying "Push harder" or "Good compressions," as needed. It also shows CPR compression depth on the display screen. ZOLL's AED Plus is the only Automated External Defibrillator (AED) that helps the rescuer achieve the correct rate and depth of chest compressions during CPR. No other AED has this capability.
Why Real-Time CPR Feedback Matters
2010 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care make it clear - in most emergencies, the quality of CPR provided by the rescuer can make the difference between life and death. Yet, even trained professionals often do not perform CPR optimally and can benefit significantly from monitoring and support. A study by Abella et al. shows that audiovisual CPR feedback improves the quality of chest compressions delivered by health care providers. Improve CPR On Every Patient
CPR Feedback Technology
ZOLL was the first to introduce technology to help improve CPR performance in 2002, and Real CPR Help® is now a standard feature on all ZOLL AEDs and defibrillators. This gives rescuers the best real-time CPR feedback and the confidence that they are providing the best cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) possible.
How Real CPR Help® Works
With ZOLL technology, rescuers receive the following CPR feedback and prompting for help in providing effective manual CPR. No other Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on the market today provides the infrequent rescuer with as much help.
- Compression Depth Indicator - achieve at least a two-inch compression depth, which is critical for high-quality CPR, as detailed in the 2010 American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines.
- Compression Rate Indicator - To the recommended compression rate of 100 compressions per minute through a metronome beep that is easy to follow.
- Audio/Message Prompting - and message feedback such as “PUSH HARDER” helps accomplish quality compressions quickly, resulting in a reinforcing message, “GOOD COMPRESSIONS.” To minimize CPR idle time, “CONTINUE CPR” is another important feedback reminder.
High-Current Rectilinear Biphasic Waveform
Improved efficacy with lower energy is the promise of biphasic waveforms. But not all biphasic waveforms are created equal. The high-current ZOLL Rectilinear Biphasic™ waveform (RBW) provides more current than the “high-energy” biphasic others use. This capability is particularly important for the difficult-to-defibrillate, high-impedance patient.
High-current Rectilinear Biphasic is the only biphasic waveform that was developed specifically for external defibrillation. Both high-and low-energy biphasic truncated exponential (BTE) waveforms were adapted from internal defibrillation. RBW has been studied extensively in over 7,000 patients and shown to be superior to monophasic. The high-current ZOLL RBW is the only waveform that the FDA has cleared to claim superiority* over monophasic waveforms.
